Zanshin(残心) Suguru Egawa Oshukan Secondary Educational School

Do you know the word “zanshin”?  “Zanshin” is a word used in kendo, the traditional Japanese style of fencing.
Ever since I entered junior high school, I’ve been playing kendo and learned a lot about the martial art.  Kendo has many concepts that have been handed down for a long time.
One of the concepts of kendo is “zanshin”.  “Zanshin”, it reads “leaving your mind” in kanji.  Zanshin refers to the state of the spirit when a match is over.  Even after you have slashed the opponent down and the battle is over, you should never be off your guard and confirm the death of the opponent while you respect him at the same time.
“Zanshin” can be or should be applied to our everyday life.   For example, we should say “gochisosama” or “it was a good meal” when we’re done with a meal.  This shows our gratitude to the ones who cooked the meal and the ingredient as you took their lives.
If you forget this “zanshin”, as a result, troubles may come back to you, like a samurai warrior who got careless after cutting his enemy down but got off his guard and killed by the opponent.  Well, actually, I may be the person who should be the most careful and always remember “zanshin” because I sometimes forget to do my homework.  When I forget my homework, I usually am given doubled amount of homework.
Today, the world has many things that need “zanshin”.  Global warming, environmental destructions, and possession of atomic bombs.  If we keep ignoring these matters, it will be us who will be “slashed down and killed” by the outcome of these problems.
To avoid such a disastrous ending, why don’t we start “zanshin” today?    The world is already a little behind this “zanshin” and we are paying the price. In order to not leave problems for the future as well as not be killed by the problems that we ignore, let’s watch our actions with “zanshin” to have a clean and better future together.
